SAFETY AT BROWN CONSTRUCTION

Safety Is Part of the Job.

At Brown Construction, safety is part of how we plan, communicate, operate, and work in the field. From excavation and heavy equipment operation to underground utility installation, we believe every project should be completed with the safety of our employees, project partners, and surrounding communities at the forefront.

MORE THAN A REQUIREMENT

OUR SAFETY CULTURE

Every Project Starts With Getting Everyone Home Safely.

Underground utility construction presents constantly changing conditions.

Heavy equipment, open excavations, existing utilities, traffic, confined work areas, and multiple contractors require crews to remain aware, communicate clearly, and follow established safety procedures.

That's why safety is integrated into the way Brown Construction plans and performs our work.

We believe productive jobsites and safe jobsites go hand in hand.

HOW WE WORK SAFELY

Built Around Safe Execution.

A safer jobsite starts long before the first bucket hits the ground. Our approach begins with understanding the work ahead, identifying potential hazards, communicating expectations, and making sure our crews are prepared for changing field conditions.

01

Plan the Work

Understanding the project scope, site conditions, existing utilities, equipment requirements, access, excavation needs, and potential hazards before work begins.

02

Communicate Clearly

Keeping operators, laborers, pipe layers, foremen, supervisors, contractors, and project partners informed as conditions and activities change throughout the day.

03

Stay Aware

Underground construction environments are constantly changing. Our crews are expected to remain aware of equipment movement, excavation conditions, surrounding utilities, personnel, and other activity on the jobsite.

04

Take Accountability

Safety belongs to everyone. Each team member has a responsibility to follow safe work practices, communicate concerns, and look out for the people around them.

05

Adapt to Conditions

What exists underground doesn't always match what appears on a plan. Experienced crews recognize changing conditions and adjust the work when necessary rather than forcing a situation that could create unnecessary risk.

05

Do It Right

Production never eliminates the responsibility to perform work safely. We believe quality construction and safe construction go hand in hand.

BUILT FOR THE WORK WE DO

Safety Where It Matters Most.

Leading the Way Since 1993

Underground utility construction creates a unique working environment. Crews may be operating below grade, around existing utilities, alongside heavy machinery, and within active construction sites where conditions can change quickly.

Brown Construction's safety approach is built around the realities of the work we perform every day.

Excavation & Trenching

Open excavations require careful planning, awareness, access management, communication, and attention to changing ground and jobsite conditions.

Existing Utilities

Working around existing underground infrastructure requires preparation and awareness. Crews must remain attentive to known utilities and changing conditions encountered during excavation.

Heavy Equipment

Excavators, loaders, trucks, and other heavy equipment are essential to our work. Clear communication, awareness of equipment movement, and coordination between operators and ground crews are critical on active jobsites.

Material & Pipe Handling

Underground construction often involves large pipe, structures, components, and materials. Crews must coordinate movements carefully and remain aware during lifting, positioning, and installation.

Active Jobsites

Our crews regularly work alongside general contractors, other trades, inspectors, engineers, and project owners. Maintaining communication and awareness helps everyone work together more safely.

Changing Conditions

Weather, soil conditions, groundwater, access, existing utilities, and project activity can change throughout the course of construction. Our teams remain alert and adapt as field conditions evolve.

BEFORE WORK BEGINS

Safety Starts
With Preparation.

A productive day in the field begins with understanding what's ahead.

Before and throughout construction, our team considers the project scope, planned activities, equipment needs, excavation conditions, surrounding utilities, access, personnel, and coordination with other project partners.

That preparation helps our crews identify potential challenges before they become bigger problems and gives everyone a clearer understanding of how the work should move forward.

Good planning doesn't just support safety. It supports quality, productivity, communication, and better project execution.

OUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET

Protecting the People Behind the Work.

Equipment can be replaced. Our people can't.

Brown Construction's reputation has been built by the operators, pipe layers, laborers, foremen, supervisors, and construction professionals who show up every day and get the work done.

Protecting those people is one of our most important responsibilities.

We expect employees to take ownership of their role on the jobsite, communicate with the people around them, remain aware of changing conditions, and never lose sight of the fact that every person working beside them deserves to go home safely.

A strong safety culture isn't built by one person. It's built by an entire team looking out for one another.

WORK HARD

Bring the effort every day.

KEEP GROWING

Learn, improve, and build your future.

WORK TOGETHER

The best projects are built as a team.

Be accountable for your responsibilities.

EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD

Experience Builds Awareness.

More than 30 years of underground construction has taught Brown Construction that no two jobsites are exactly alike. Plans provide the direction, but experienced people are essential when those plans meet real-world conditions.

Knowing how equipment moves around a site, recognizing changing excavation conditions, understanding how multiple utilities interact, coordinating with ground crews, and anticipating the next phase of work all contribute to safer, more efficient execution.

Since 1993, Brown Construction has continued to build on that field experience while investing in the people, equipment, and capabilities needed for demanding underground construction.
